Star tight end Travis Kelce will return to the Kansas City Chiefs for his 14th season in the National Football League, ending months of speculation about whether the veteran would retire or explore free agency.

The announcement came Monday, March 9, through Kelce’s popular podcast, New Heights with Jason & Travis Kelce, which confirmed via Instagram that the 36-year-old tight end will be “back with the Chiefs for year 14.”

The podcast accompanied the news with a playful video parody inspired by the John Wick action franchise. In the clip, an animated version of Kelce delivers a famous line from the film: “People keep asking if I’m back and I haven’t really had an answer. But now, yeah, I’m thinking I’m back!”

NFL insider Ian Rapoport was the first to report Kelce’s return earlier Monday, noting that the veteran was technically approaching free agency and could have drawn interest from several teams around the league.

Kelce has spent his entire NFL career with Kansas City after the team selected him in the 2013 NFL Draft. Over more than a decade with the franchise, he has become one of the most dominant tight ends in league history and a central figure in the Chiefs’ modern dynasty.

During his tenure, Kelce helped lead the Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories, including championships in 2020, 2023 and 2024. His chemistry with quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been widely regarded as one of the most productive quarterback-tight end partnerships in the league.

However, the 2025 season proved challenging for Kansas City. The team failed to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2014, a major setback for a franchise that had become accustomed to deep postseason runs. The situation worsened late in the season when Mahomes suffered a knee injury in December 2025, sidelining the star quarterback before the regular season concluded.

Kelce had been under contract with the Chiefs through the 2025–2026 NFL season, but questions about his long-term future began circulating as the season progressed. With more than a decade of intense competition behind him and numerous accolades already secured, speculation grew that the veteran tight end might consider retirement.

In November 2025, Kelce addressed those rumors while speaking with reporters, explaining that he was closely watching how his older brother, Jason Kelce, handled the decision to step away from football.

Jason, a longtime center for the Philadelphia Eagles, announced his retirement in March 2024 after 13 seasons in the NFL. His departure provided a personal example for Travis as he weighed the demands of the sport against the possibility of life after football.

“You know, seeing my brother go through it and seeing just how the league works, the season kind of restarts in April, and I want to give the Chiefs a good opportunity to know whether I come back or not,” Travis said at the time. “And vice versa — whether they want me back or not.”

He added that he hoped to make any decision about his future before the NFL draft and the start of free agency, allowing the organization adequate time to plan for the upcoming season.

Jason Kelce also offered public advice to his younger brother while appearing on Monday Night Countdown on ESPN in December 2025. The retired Eagles star suggested that stepping away from the game temporarily could help Travis gain clarity about his next move.

“In my opinion, to nail that decision, you have to step away from the game for a little bit,” Jason said. “Play these last three games, enjoy them with your teammates and coaches. The team’s going to be different no matter whether you come back or not next year.”

Jason emphasized that emotions often run high immediately after a season ends, especially when a team has endured a difficult campaign. He encouraged Travis to take time to process the experience before making a final decision.

“Enjoy these last three games and then let it sink in,” he said. “There are so many emotions with this game right after a season, especially with the way this one’s been. You’ve got to step away from it, think about it, and then the answer will come to you.”

Off the field, Kelce’s personal life has also been making headlines. The NFL star became engaged to global pop icon Taylor Swift in August 2025, marking a significant milestone in their relationship. The couple began dating in the summer of 2023 and quickly became one of the most talked-about pairings in sports and entertainment.

Sources close to the couple previously indicated that both Kelce and Swift have been actively involved in planning their upcoming wedding. According to an insider, Swift finds it “cute” that the football star wants to help organize the details.

The couple is also reportedly thinking about their long-term future together, with plans that could include starting a family in the near future. Those close to them say they do not intend to have a long engagement and are looking ahead to the next chapter of their lives.

For now, Kelce’s decision to return for another season ensures that Chiefs fans will once again see one of the franchise’s greatest players take the field. As Kansas City looks to rebound from a disappointing campaign, the veteran tight end’s leadership and experience are expected to play a key role in the team’s efforts to return to championship contention.
