MGM+ is set to debut its latest crime drama, The Westies, on July 9, bringing viewers into the dangerous world of 1980s Hell’s Kitchen in New York City. Set during the height of the gangster era, the series follows the notorious Irish-American gang known as the Westies as they fight to protect their territory while navigating fragile alliances with the Italian Mafia and increasing pressure from federal investigators.
The story unfolds as construction begins on the Jacob Javits Convention Center, a development that threatens the Westies’ long-held control over parts of Hell’s Kitchen. Although the gang is vastly outnumbered by New York’s powerful Five Families of the Italian Mafia, its members have earned a fearsome reputation through their brutality and calculated tactics, allowing them to maintain an uneasy partnership with the city’s larger crime organizations. As tensions rise between the gang’s older leadership and a younger generation eager to take control, internal conflict threatens to destroy the alliance that has kept the organization in power while drawing the attention of the FBI’s expanding investigation into organized crime.
While The Westies is not based on a single true story, the series takes inspiration from the real-life Irish-American crime gang that operated in New York City from the 1960s onward. The actual Westies became one of the city’s most notorious criminal organizations, forging ties with the Italian Mafia despite being much smaller in size. Over several decades, the gang was linked to numerous violent crimes, including dozens of murders, earning a reputation as one of the most feared groups in New York’s underworld.
Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons leads the cast as gang leader Eamon Sweeney. He is joined by Titus Welliver, Tom Brittney, Jessica Frances Dukes, Stanley Morgan, Sarah Bolger, Allen Leech, Hamish Allan-Headly, Vincent Walsh and Hilary McCormack, who portray key figures connected to the gang and its rivals throughout the series.
The Westies marks MGM+’s latest addition to the crime drama genre, combining fictional storytelling with historical inspiration drawn from one of New York City’s most infamous criminal organizations. The first episode of the series will be available to stream exclusively on MGM+ beginning July 9.
